Author, Susannah Fullerton, has a special interest in Jane Austen, and has written many books about her, but Susannah’s latest book, Great Writers & the Cats Who Owned Them, is an ode to cats and the inspiration they’ve provided for their owners who also happened to be great writers, and cat lovers. Featuring 17 writers, the book tells how Dr Johnson’s cat, Hodge, had a role in creating the first great English dictionary, and, the inspiration that a feline called Foss, provided for Edward Lear, the author of The Owl and the Pussycat. Other authors include Charles Dickens, Ernest Hemingway, Margaret Mitchell and Dame Lynley Dodd, the latter being the creator of the Hairy Maclary children’s books. Susannah will be speaking in the foyer of the National Library of Australia about Great Writers & the Cats Who Owned Them, 6.00pm-7.30pm, 5 February 2026.
